HOME SECURITY & PROTECTION
How to Keep Your Home Safe from Intruders
Breaking and entering is one of the most common crimes in Queensland. The Brisbane Times reported that there were more than 11,000 break-ins across Brisbane in 2019, which equates to more than one every hour on average.
Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimise the chances that burglars will target your home. Always keep doors and windows locked, never leave your key under the doormat or in an obvious place, and consider sensors and cameras for added home security. Here’s what you need to know.
Door and Window Sensors
You can buy standalone battery-operated, WiFi sensors that are easy to fit to your doors and windows. If a door or window with a sensor is opened or closed, you are immediately alerted via your smartphone. The sensors are small, inconspicuous, and affordable, and there are no unsightly wires. Once you have downloaded the relevant app, you can check on your phone that no one has tampered with your doors or windows while you’ve been away from home.
Security Cameras
There is a range of different security cameras available for indoor or outdoor use. Some are battery-operated and some are solar-powered. The one you choose will depend on your requirements. Most cameras operate on WiFi so you can check what’s happening on your property remotely, wherever you are, via an app on your smartphone. Typically, security cameras store images on an SD card and the cloud so you can retrieve pictures and footage if necessary.
Flexible Cameras
If you choose a camera with two-way communication, you can use it to speak to someone at your property when you’re not there, such as an unexpected delivery driver with a package. Security cameras are so flexible that you can even use them as a baby monitor when you have little ones in a different room to you, or to check on your pets when you’re at work.
Some cameras come with automatic tracking so they are activated when they sense motion. With the cute-looking robot camera, you can rotate the camera remotely via an app from your smartphone.
Finally, with a solar-powered dummy camera, you can choose a setting so a light comes on when someone approaches. This is an excellent deterrent for nighttime intruders.
Many criminals are opportunists. They see a door or window has been left open or unlocked, and they decide to act on it. Keep windows and doors locked, remove the keys from the locks when you’re not at home, and install sensors and security cameras at appropriate locations around your home.
